Lion's Den at LionMouth Rural Centre
A quirky little tea room set at the top of LionMouth Rural Centre's terraces. The menu consists of homemade fayre, made fresh every day. Soups, sandwiches, quiche, panini and cream teas are usually on the menu. Much of the fruit, vegetables and salads are grown on-site or sourced locally. Some of the homegrown produce is made into jams, chutneys and cordials. The bees on site produce honey which is used in cakes and sold in jars. The eggs are from hens on site or other local free range producers. Local milk and cheese are also used. Most food intolerences can be catered for, including gluten free diets.
The tea room is run and staffed by people who have mild mental health or learning difficulties, who are working towards qualifications. Dogs and muddy boots are welcome, as the tea room is situated beside the Deerness Valley Walkway. Visitors can also enjoy the woodland walk and demonstration gardens on site. Open 10-3.30 Monday-Saturday (last orders at 3). The number 43 bus from Durham to Esh Winning stops at the college cross roads which is a 200 yard walk from the side gate. There is ample car parking accessed through the bottom gate and disabled parking spaces at the top of the terrace.
